Impact Evaluation Research for Development is a consortium established to bridge the capacity gap between the academia and the actual level of monitoring and evaluation skill sets, competencies and expertise required to transform M&E graduates to M&E experts with practical skills and innovative solutions to generate quality data for better decision making which guarantees achievement of targets and objectives for projects. Through innovative training approaches, IERD provides a unique opportunity for networking to both upcoming and skilled M&E experts dealing with different projects.

This programme targets young impact evaluation researchers who aspire to inform decision making with research and evidence.

Impact evaluation is an approach that seeks to assess the changes that can be attributed to a particular intervention which may include projects, programs or policy.

Impact evaluation research therefore seeks to answer the question of what could have been the outcome without the intervention. The changes attributed to any intervention maybe intended or unintended but they are all important in evaluating the impact of the programme. Impact evaluation promotes evidence-based policy making by providing information on what works and what doesn’t.

At IERD we believe that a Learning by doing approach is the best in equipping young researchers in practical research skills for evidence based research. We expose our research mentees in our ongoing projects as well as proposal writing for new research projects. The broad goal is to support skills transfer that will influence public policy.

At IERD, we believe that research promotes evidence based decision making and we encourage all our mentees to invest time in the Learning by doing Impact Evaluation (LearnIE) research programme

Through this programme,

  • We partner with organizations to conduct Baseline studies, Mid Term Reviews (MTRs) as well as post Implementation reviews (PIRs) for their projects.
  • We equip upcoming researchers with impact evaluation research skills which include Experimental Studies  and Non-Experimental Studies  methodologies
  • We conduct Systematic Reviews to document existing evidence for development intervention studies
  • We conduct trainings in various statistical tools including SPSS, Eviews and Stata for data analysis though our Data Analytics programme,
  • We promote research publication through our “From Paper to Journal” platform

Innovative ideas for development (2iD) Research Lab is an initiative of the Impact Evaluation Research for Development (IERD) which aims to promote a participatory approach in projects design by building capacity for researchers, monitoring and evaluation practitioners and project management experts through a series of workshops, seminars and one on one coaching and mentorship programmes. These programmes aim to equip you with practical knowledge to enable you to make a well-informed judgement on the extent to which a programme's or projects effectiveness will be ensured from the design stage to implementation. Our research approach is participatory and evidence based and we seek to promote a digitally inclusive knowledge society using experimental approach for ICT solutions.

2iD provides a unique opportunity for networking to both upcoming and skilled researchers and M&E experts dealing with different projects.  We also train project management teams on how to come up with results oriented Monitoring and Evaluation Systems and how to evaluate the impact of their projects using measurable parameters.

Our methodology

We provide regular training workshops that impart practical skills while cultivating an evidence based research mindset. Our training workshops are facilitated by experts and are highly interactive allowing participants to learn not only from the experts but also from each other’s experiences. In addition, we provide coaching, expert mentoring and peer networking sessions for members.

We have several Technical Working Groups (TWGs):Monitoring and Evaluation TWG;Agricultural policy research TWG;Evidence based research for health TWGSocial protection and Welfare TWG; and ICT solutions to development TWG

 The TWGs meet regularly to brainstorm on specific research ideas and develop collaborative research proposals. Coaching and mentorship for research proposal writing and data analysis techniques is done at the TWG level. Please feel free to join any of the TWGs and leap the benefits of teamwork as you gain hands on experience in writing winning proposals.
